Amusa to offer talent with a bang tomorrow at Legacy

Malena Amusa has been back in St. Louis for six months, and already she's launching her dream event - a no-holds-barred talent contest, styled after the ‘Showtime at the Apollo' in New York City.
In fact, it was the busy arts scene in Manhattan, Amusa's old stomping ground, that inspired her to help St. Louis churn out world-class artists.

"I was a reporter by day and dancer by night," said Amusa, 27. "With so many opportunities for artists to achieve in NYC, I felt unstoppable. I had to bring that energy to St. Louis, my home town. We have amazing artists here. But instead of excelling, they are spending their last dime on bus fare. That's why I'm here. To build industry. And to inspire people big time."

This Wednesday, June 29, Amusa will launch her Big Bang Talent Concert at Legacy Books & Café, at 5249 Delmar Blvd., from 7pm-9pm. "The Legacy is at the heart of urban performance art," Amusa said.

After a 1-month search for talent, Amusa hand-picked 10 contestants - rockers, rappers, dancers, and crooners - all spanning diverse backgrounds.

"One artist I found in the Loop," Amusa said. "He was at the corner, stroking his guitar, and singing louder than an ambulance! His passion drew me in and when I got close, I realized his voice needs to be heard around the world. He's a white Bob Marley."

During this two-hour concert, fireball mc Coco Hype will push the audience to speak their minds and voice their support. Meanwhile, the daring artists will push the limits of sound and movement to re-invent themselves on stage, and compete for $100 in cash.

The audience will ultimately decide the top winner.

"I told the contestants, act like there's 1 million dollars on the line. Give us that show," Amusa said. "Innovation and interaction are key. Make the crowd cry, then laugh."

That's why Amusa named this talent contest the ‘Big Bang.' "When people walk in and sit down, I want them to jump right back up," she said. "The point of art is to make us bigger and better."
Having traveled the world as a reporter and dancer, from New York City to India and Africa, Amusa has seen the toll of economic hardship on artists and other professionals. "A lack of money can zap the creativity out of an entire city," Amusa said. "It's time we reserve that. Every single one of us has to be a star!"

Wednesday, not only will artists be able to compete for cash money, but Amusa plans to partner with some of them to record their best songs in the studio of ST LOU.HITZ, Amusa's brother, and founder/producer of Audio Trendz Entertainment music production company.

"My brother is like the Timbaland of the Midwest," Amusa said. "Every beat is full of passion and I'm excited, he's DJing the concert!"
